Over time, it acquired great cultural importance, as evidenced by its mention in one of the world's oldest documents - the Indian Vedas. When a specific type of mold spreads to the light hardwood of the agarwood tree, the tree protects itself by impregnating its bark with a dark and strong-smelling resin.
